Essential Tools for flawless makeup

While the main focus of a makeup routine may be putting the right makeup on the correct areas, many people tend to overlook that one of the key aspects to achieving the perfect look is having the right tools. But, with so many brushes and sponges to choose from, where do you even start? That’s where I come in.

We all want perfectly blended eyeshadow, natural-looking foundation, and contour game that would make even Kim Kardashian jealous, but how do we achieve this? Simple – by having the right set of makeup tools.

Choosing The Right Makeup Tools

Before investing in a set of tools, ask yourself: what’s your current makeup routine? What’s your budget? What is important to you when it comes to a set of brushes? For those starting out, I suggest selecting a few brushes that are versatile, align with your budget, and give you the longevity or the aesthetic that is most important to you.

I’d recommend starting with the Avon Rose Gold makeup brushes – a 4-piece collection with multiple uses. Retailing for R129.90 each, there is a fan brush, an eyeshadow brush, a powder brush, and a 2-in-1 blush/contour brush and sponge.

The fan brush is used to evenly apply highlighter across the top of your cheekbones and down the bridge of your nose. It also acts like a miniature broom, removing excess powder from the face.

The eyeshadow brush, like the name suggests, is used to apply and blend eyeshadow.

The handy powder brush has multiple uses – to contour, brush on baking powder, or apply foundation.

The blush/contour brush, which is perfectly angled, can be used to apply bronzer, blush or highlighter. The sponge, situated conveniently on the opposite side of the powder brush, can be used to blend foundation and concealer, or apply baking powder below the eyes and or to the rest of the face.

Maintaining Your Makeup Tools

Now that you know what to look for in the perfect makeup tool set and understand the use of each brush and sponge, let’s tackle the daunting task of cleaning your makeup tools. I say “daunting” because most of us dread this part. Patience and time are required – two things we all have a small supply of, which often leads to us pushing the task to a later day. But don’t delay!

Unwashed brushes can lead to the build-up of acne-causing bacteria, as well as brush damage. Depending on how often you use your brushes, you should think about cleaning them anywhere from a few times a week to once a month. I use a combination of a brush mat, baby shampoo, and spray rubbing alcohol on my brushes to disinfect them. I then lay them out on a towel to dry overnight and voila – clean brushes!
