Staying Busy While Staying at Home

Sporting events have been canceled, concerts have been postponed and schools are shut. The COVID-19 outbreak has resulted in a full lockdown, which means we’re all indoors for the foreseeable future. And while staying home is the best way to protect yourself and others from the coronavirus, it could lead to a lesser evil: boredom and frustration. But what's there to do while stuck indoors? Here are 5 tips on how to help make your time quarantined as interesting and as productive as possible.

Staying Home

Take Time to Reflect

There’s nothing better than binge-watching your favourite series, but perhaps you could use this time to reflect on your own life too? What have you accomplished in the last year? What goals are you setting for yourself in the next year? Take a bubble bath, make yourself a hot drink, try writing a journal, or reflect on the positive things that have happened in your life and share them with those you love - after all, everybody needs a bit of a “cheer-me-up” during this time.

Bring the Outside Inside

We enjoy being surrounded by nature and feeling its presence around us, but with the corona lockdown in full swing, there are many South Africans that don’t have the luxury of a fresh view. The sky, earth, water, and other outdoor elements make us feel refreshed, calm, and one with the earth. How do we get these elements from the outdoors, inside of our home?

Start by letting natural light into your home on a daily basis by opening windows and doors. Instead of tossing those pumpkin seeds, try planting them into tin cans and watch them grow. You can also teach kids about the germination cycle by doing the bean plant experiment: using a clear jar and potting mix, plant large bean seeds that make it easy to see leaves above the soil and roots below the soil.

Get Disney-inspired

Not sure what to do with yourself? Take note from "Tangled" star, Rapunzel, who has an entire song about how she spent her days alone in a castle. Activities included: ventriloquy, candle-making, papier-mâché and adding a new painting to her gallery. In addition to some great new hobbies to try out for the next 21 days, take the time to watch some of your favourite Disney classics - with your family or by yourself - to leave your soul feeling like butter-salt flavoured popcorn and slushies.

A Virtual Connection

People probably won’t have much trouble remembering to stay in touch with their best friends while stuck at home. However, impromptu catch-ups, such as occasional lunches with co-workers or bumping into an acquaintance at a coffee shop, are more at risk of falling by the wayside.

However, it doesn’t mean you have to lose those special moments altogether. Have a virtual lunch with your office bestie or do brunches with your family by using video enabled calling. You can even have a virtual date with bae over a webcam - the perfect excuse to get ready and get glamorous.
