In line with the World Cancer 2022-2024 theme: Close the Care Gap, global cosmetics and personal care company Avon Justine has ramped up its support for breast cancer awareness in the run up to World Cancer Day by giving customers the opportunity to make a discretionary minimum donation of R5 at its Online store platforms that will be pledged to non-governmental organisations (NGOs) working with breast cancer survivors.

World Cancer Day is an international day that is commemorated on 4 February to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment. World Cancer Day is led by the Union for International Cancer Control to support the goals of the World Cancer Declaration, written in 2008.

As part of its long-standing campaign in the fight against breast cancer which spans more than three decades, Avon Justine has raised funds for NGOs working at the coalface of breast cancer awareness and education through the proceeds generated from the sale of selected personal care products such as the iThemba Body Lotion, iThemba Sun cream, iThemba Hand Cream & iThemba Crystal Pin.

Through this initiative, we are giving our customers the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution in the fight against breast cancer. This is what we mean by giving together. This resonates with the theme of the day - Close the Care gap – which acknowledges the power of working together. At Avon Justine, we believe that working together as a collective we can make a huge difference in the fight against the scourge of breast cancer.

We are mindful of the economic hardship that many of our consumers are facing. However, it is astounding what a minimal discretionary contribution of R5 can make to the NGOs we are supporting and how these much-needed funds can help these organisations to live up to Avon’s breast cancer awareness promise of ensuring that everyone knows the signs, knows the risks, and knows how to take action. We urge and encourage our customers to open their hearts and wallets and be counted in the fight against this silent pandemic,” says Mafahle Mareletse, Managing Director: Avon Justine Turkey, Africa & Middle East.

In 2022, Avon Justine raised and donated R1.7 million from the sale of breast cancer awareness products.

It is with these funds that organisations such as Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) are able to foster early detection of breast cancer by providing free breast screenings in communities across the country.

CANSA provided free breast screenings to 650 individuals in 2022 through funds Avon Justine donated to the NGO.

It is through this unique partnership that CANSA has with Avon Justine that enabled us to raise awareness, save lives and reach women who would not otherwise have access to clinical breast screenings. We are grateful to Avon Justine and their customers for their generosity and continued support of CANSA. Like ripples that are caused by a pebble that is thrown into the pond, our partnership has heralded a series of events that has positively impacted the lives of countless more others,” says Joani Sadie, CANSA Corporate Relationship Coordinator.

Avon Justine has been at the forefront of the fight against breast cancer since 1992 when the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade launched in the UK. Over the last three decades, with the Avon Foundation for Women, we’ve donated more than US$939 million to breast cancer causes; educating 180 million people about the disease, and funding breast health screening for over 16.4 million women. This has only been possible with the support of our community.
