THE POWER OF SCENT

THE POWER OF SCENT

Freshly mowed grass, warm out-of-the-oven cookies, the salty breeze of a specific coastal town and even newly washed sheets … Our sense of smell is one of the most powerful senses we possess, and the merest hint of something familiar can trigger a special memory or wonderful moment in our lives that we treasure forever.
Even though our sense of smell is the most evocative sense, it is often overlooked because we rely so much on what we see and what we hear. We very rarely think about how we smell the world. However, there is a direct scientifically proven link in our brains between memory and smell:

The olfactory system (the bodily structures that serve the sense of smell) is located in the same part of our brain that affects emotions, memory and creativity. And, the part of the brain that processes smell, interacts with regions of the brain that are responsible for storing emotional memories.
According to the Sense of Smell Institute, the average person is able to distinguish over 10, 000 different odours. A growing evidence of various studies recently testify to the impact both positive and negative that smell can have on human behaviour, mood and emotions.
